How to use the FGPA calculator?
Here’s how to use our FGPA calculator:
- Input your GPA scores for all levels. If you haven’t completed all levels, leave the respective fields blank.
- Choose your desired graduation class from the dropdown menu if you want to calculate the GPA needed to achieve it.
Note: If you have completed all levels, do not choose a Target Graduation Class; the calculator will determine that based on your inputs.
- Press the “Calculate” button to view your current FGPA, your expected graduation class (if all levels are complete), or the required GPA for your target class.
How to calculate your FGPA?
Follow the steps below to calculate your University of Ghana FGPA manually. Our calculator uses the same formula.
Step #1 — Calculate your GPA
For each level, calculate your GPA based on the grades received in courses taken during that level using the formula below:

Note: University of Ghana calculates and shows your GPA on your transcript for each academic semester.
Step #2 — Apply weights
Multiply each level’s GPA by its respective weight and divide by the total weight (which sums to 6).
FGPA = (Level 100 GPA + Level 200 GPA + 2 × Level 300 GPA + 2 × Level 400 GPA) / 6
Step #3 — Sum the weighted GPAs
Sum the weighted GPAs from all levels to determine the Final GPA (FGPA).
Let’s take an example.
Assuming Ama, a Political Science student at the University of Ghana, completes her degree with the following GPAs:
- Level 100: 3.20
- Level 200: 3.60
- Level 300: 2.90
- Level 400: 3.00
The calculation for her Final GPA would be as follows:
FGPA = (3.20 × 1/6) + (3.60 × 1/6) + (2.90 × 2/6) + (3.00 × 2/6)
Calculating for each level, we get the following contributions:
- Level 100: 0.53
- Level 200: 0.60
- Level 300: 0.96
- Level 400: 1.00
Thus, Ama’s total FGPA is 3.09. That is:
FGPA = 0.53 + 0.60 + 0.96 + 1.00 = 3.09
Considering the University of Ghana’s degree classification, Ama completed her B.A. in Political Science with Second Class Honours (Upper Division).
University of Ghana degree classification
The University of Ghana looks at your Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) to determine your graduating class in your undergraduate studies.
This score is calculated based on all your grades from the first year (Level 100) of your degree, including the required courses for the whole university and your specific department or school.
The full scheme of classification is as follows:

Why is your FGPA important?
The Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) is essential for several reasons.
First, it measures a student’s overall academic performance and determines the classification of a student’s degree upon graduation. This classification influences job prospects and eligibility for further studies.
That aside, a high FGPA acknowledges students’ hard work and dedication throughout their academic journey and rewards them for their efforts and achievements.
